On The Run at Sunrise?

Always on the run?

Always worried things are catching up to you and you have to run faster.

Early morning we start out on a slow pace...

Looking around and taking in our surroundings.

The sun has broken through with morning light and we are newly awakened to the day.

We begin our day and seem to fall right in line behind others, following their path and their way.

It may not even be the direction we are suppose to be traveling, but it seems safe, others are doing it too. We stay sheltered and hidden in the shadows hoping no one will single us out.

COMFORT in HIM

Life moves forward around us every single second. Those seconds make minutes and those add up to days, months and years. Moments can be filled with joy or sorrow, peace or chaos, but through it all despite discontentment or circumstance I must trust that God's hand is in everything. I have to turn to Him.

Truly making a day would be impossible with out His presence in our lives. Some days are harder than others when the situations involve those I love and I feel so helpless to meeting their needs. I have to remind myself, only God can meet those needs not me. In the depths of 'hell' the only source for good and light is the Father.

You will find if you can get to that place of relying on Him you will have balance in the moment and regain your ground. This works through times of discord and despair.

God brings harmony if you are listening and waiting on Him and through this you will find peace.

DRESS UP

We arrived at Tara and Justin's house last week and Tara brought out this special box. It was medium large in size and we were all inquisitive. As she pulled the box open out erupted beautiful fabrics in every imaginable color. It was memorizing just to witness the box opening. These rich fabrics were her collection of dance costumes over the years of dancing. After every performance her mother had carefully packed away the costume, collecting many years together in this one special box.

Lady L was in awe of the colors and the fabrics and she reached out, eyes sparkling with a growing smile across her face. Tara carefully pulled each one out and spread them across the floor as Lady L ran between them giggling try hard to make a choice of a favorite one to put on.

In this life we are often faced with decisions about things. That is where my dad would say, "Laurie, have you made your list of priorities?" Artist friend from Colorado, Armella Benton, reminded me of that this summer when I was struggling with health issues and the heat. Sometimes we have very limited choices and other times we are overcome with too many choices.

Finally Lady L choose a beautiful pink netted dress with white dots and black ribbon. ( I wish I could show you the whole picture... it is awesome.) She even managed to hold her dress up as she waltzed around the room dancing in this floaty puffy netting.

Choices we make in life usually affect deeper things. Sometimes our choices affect other people. Our negative choices often weigh heavily on those that love us, forcing them to make choices of their own creating a domino affect in a family. With every choice is a consequence and we must always consider what will follow with the decisions we make.

Brings back vivid memories of Sesame Street when they would run that story about 'IF I DO THIS...then this will happen, which will make this happen and then that will happen.' Maybe we need to think about things in a simple way like this... Make your list first and then a second list of the things that could happen from your initial decision.

Seems like in today's world the pressure is so intense we make hasty decisions often regretting them later in the day or even later in life. Too bad life is not as easy as Lady L sees it. It should be...God wants it to be. He wants us to live our life and be happy, NOT stressed.

I had to throw in a picture of my outdoor boots for a laugh.... quite a contrast from Lady L's precious pink... but it brings me back to what I wanted to blog about this morning. Dress Up or dress down with boots? Is it important to dress up to impress people with who we think we are? That is where I was going originally with this blog. What does your 'dress up' have to do with who you are?

Know a man/woman by their actions and their travels through life. We all leave a trail on this planet with our choices and our actions. How we 'Dress Up' our lives and our appearance means very little if we are dark of heart. Do not judge by appearance but judge by heart and actions. Those decisions you make today create changes in the future, basically echoing on forever.

Here is the history of Father's Day from Wikipedia:
Father's Day is a celebration of fathers inaugurated in the early twentieth century to complement Mother's Day in celebrating fatherhood and male parenting. Father's Day is celebrated on a variety of dates worldwide and typically involves gift-giving, special dinners to fathers, and family-oriented activities.The first observance of Father's Day actually took place in Fairmont, West Virginia on July 5, 1908. It was organized by Mrs. Grace Golden Clayton, who wanted to celebrate the lives of the 210 fathers who had been lost in the Monongah Mining disaster several months earlier in Monongah, West Virginia, on December 6, 1907. It's possible that Clayton was influenced by the first celebration of Mother's Day that same year, just a few miles away. Clayton chose the Sunday nearest to the birthday of her recently deceased father.Unfortunately, the day was overshadowed by other events in the city, West Virginia did not officially register the holiday, and it was not celebrated again. All the credit for Father's Day went to Sonora Dodd from Spokane, who invented independently her own celebration of Father's Day just two years later, also influenced by Jarvis' Mother's Day. Clayton's celebration was forgotten until 1972, when one of the attendants to the celebration saw Nixon's proclamation of Father's Day, and worked to recover its legacy. The celebration is now held every year in the Central United Methodist Church – the Williams Memorial Methodist Episcopal Church, South, was torn down in 1922. Fairmont is now promoted as the "Home of the First Father's Day Service"A bill to accord national recognition of the holiday was introduced in Congress in 1913. In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson went to Spokane to speak in a Father's Day celebration and wanted to make it official, but Congress resisted, fearing that it would become commercialized. US President Calvin Coolidge recommended in 1924 that the day be observed by the nation, but stopped short of issuing a national proclamation. Two earlier attempts to formally recognize the holiday had been defeated by Congress. In 1957, Maine Senator Margaret Chase Smith wrote a proposal accusing Congress of ignoring fathers for 40 years while honoring mothers, thus "[singling] out just one of our two parents"In 1966, President Lyndon B. Johnson issued the first presidential proclamation honoring fathers, designating the third Sunday in June as Father's Day^. Six years later, the day was made a permanent national holiday when President Richard Nixon signed it into law in 1972.In addition to Father's Day, International Men's Day is celebrated in many countries on November 19 for men and boys who are not fathers.

A Friend Smiles

I was working hard in the studio yesterday finishing up this piece and working on the bear I began at the workshop. The doorbell rang and it was Ann Morgan, one of the workshop attendees and now a new friend from across the lake.

We were instantly talking about the workshop and about Jane, the wonderful artist from New Zealand. Jane is an artist that is so respectful of mother-earth and all God has created. The land is apart of Jane. Her work celebrates the beauty and bounty of the Earth.

When a friend smiles they share the bounty of life and love. Life is fuller with our friends. God give us boundless moments to enjoy our lives and everything surrounding us. We are often too busy to even realize what is there for us and who is there for us.

The next time a friend smiles, know the light that comes from that smile is from Him. As you give to others, you open the way for them to be blessed with greater blessings through God.

This painting was purchased by a collector in Massachusetts about six years ago. Their home had a sight fire and this piece had some smoke damage. The other paintings of mine that they had were fine. Eric is selling this painting and if you are interested in it or you buy it, I will have him send it to me first for touch up and repair to the paint with out charge. I will also provide an updated Certificate of Authenticity for the painting too. The value today once it is touched up is $2995-3000.

Okay so I scraped The Majestic Three and they become the URGENT two. The Abstract Horse Painting is very unpredictable. I finish a painting and I know.. I know before I walk away from the canvas that the journey is not done. I know that I have to go back and rework and free the horses. It happens every time I try to do an impressionistic equine piece.

The layering of color with a palette knife is never predictable. Emotion and eye control the placement and use of color on the canvas.

Well when I went to bed last night it was still snowing. I know we have over a foot on the ground and we were not suppose to even have an inch. Go figure.

Tonight is the formal Charity Ball in Mt Pleasant for Cypress Basin Hospice. I am hoping it warms up enough to start melting the snow so we can drive there! This will be revealed in a few hours I am sure.

I spoke with Selah Ranch yesterday and I am going to delay my workshop until May. I will have a confirmed date and syllabus out in about 7-10 days. I am working in God's time with this. They had suggested I do it the first of April, but I never felt confident with that date. May feels better to me. Selah Ranch is an absolutely gorgeous retreat based on renewal, retreat and rest. That is what I want for every artist that attends. I also encourage husbands and friends to come along. It is a vacation inside a workshop. Candy, the owner is putting together a package where all meals will be included as well as snacks and drinks during your stay. As soon as I get those figures from her and a date confirmed, I will have it posted on the blog on the side where you can click and down load a pdf with all the information on it.

Have you ever realized how when you are happy or excited about something that your joy reaches out and affects everyone around you? It is contagious. When you share happy times with friends and family you easily pass the joyful high on to anyone you meet over the next few days or even weeks. This is my goal for the workshop. Make it your goal in life. Share the joy.

Those of you that follow my blog know that Hospice means much to us after the death of my father-in-law Ben Pace. Hospice is no longer just care at the end in the last six weeks of life. Hospice today is care for all levels of need and is in place for the comfort of the patient at all times. Hospice is family based for quality end of life care that provides compassion, dignity, independence and respect. Many patients go on Hospice that provides care once or twice a week and stay at that level until the need arises to go to 24 hour care.

Terry and I support this beautiful transition that is available for families dealing with life limiting illness that strike their loved ones. His father Ben was a picture of health and once his breathing issues surfaced, it was only about a year longer that he lived and the last two months were a nightmare for him.

Here is a bit of information about this specific event in Mt Pleasant Texas. It is an honor to be apart of this fundraiser.

Hearts for Hospice Ball

“The social event of the year for this part of Northeast Texas”, is how one guest describes the most successful fundraiser for Cypress Basin Hospice. This “Black Tie Optional” event is held on the first Saturday in February and is presented by an all volunteer group of individuals from the communities served by the Cypress Basin Hospice. Mark Scirto, a well known Tyler celebrity, and meteorologist serves as the Master of Ceremonies. The prestigious evening includes a catered meal, action packed silent and live auctions, and live music from the “Grateful Geezers”, a Houston band who has performed at this event since 2006. Tickets can be purchased through the Cypress Basin Hospice office after January 1st. Don't delay as these tickets sell out fast; corporate sponsorships are also available.

Those of us who live on farms and raise animals know about the special attachment we get for some of our critters. We have raised horses and cattle for over 30 years now, and most of them had a price tag on them. However, a few I wouldn't let go for any price. They were like my kids and deserved special care and attention. Most of the stock breeders I know are like that.
Julie Pack raised this cow from a calf and took her to shows when she was in High School. She won some pretty significant awards with her (Breed Champion) as well as scholarship money. The cow had a bunch of calves for her too, and when she died Julie managed to salvaged some of her bones - including this scapula. Some of you might think that is pretty icky, but Julie is on her way to becoming a veterinarian and like most people with interests bending that way, bones are a source of fascination and wonder - not things to viewed with dread and disgust.
Anyway, Julie came up with the idea of having the cow's image painted on the cow's actual shoulder blade, and since I always like a challenge and new "canvases" I agreed to the task.
I painted the image area with gesso first as a primer and then painted using traditional oils. To protect it I will spray the entire bone with a matte finish varnish when it dries. And the whole thing stands horizontal on its own due to the shape of the bone.
A pretty novel idea, don't you think?

I had to finish it off with the red moon. It has been 372 years since the last lunar eclipse with a beautiful red moon. "A total lunar eclipse occurs when the Earth aligns between a full moon and the sun, blocking any sunlight from reflecting off the moon's surface."

One of the articles I read was how someone commented that God gifted us with a beautiful early Christmas present. I could not agree more.

I wanted to post one of my signature painted pony pulls. It is always a compliment to have another artist try to imitate my work. I developed this style back in 2006 after a show in NY with the Five Graces. If you know me well, you know the story behind it. The original first pony pull (aka the nude on 30 x 40 canvas) was purchased by a gallery owner in the UK. He continues to buy more from art from me and several of my other abstract styles with drip technique and glazed layerings. He wishes today he had not sold the original in his gallery, but had kept it for his personal collection. Neither he nor I would know that it would become so highly collected.

You can follow stories and current interviews of my work in the upcoming July issue of Appaloosa Journal, the June issue as a featured artist in Western Art Collector, and in the June issue of Cowboys & Indians with the Artists of Texas.

This summer one of my Painted Pony Pulls will be featured in the Million Dollar Pfizer Hits on the Hudson with a Gallery opening August 7th in Woodstock NY at the Fletcher Gallery and then September 12th at the main event where the painting will be silent auctioned off to raise funds for horses.

The painting shown is a sold commission painting completed this week.

Cow ponies know to grab their naps when they can. At Lee Clay's calf working last week, about 6 cowboys took turns roping and dragging calves to the workers. Horses work hard doing this job and in between "turns" the smart ones conserve their energy. This particular horse was quite good at turning on the energy when it was needed and turning it off again just as fast. Smart.
